The Georgia Symposium
on Ethics and Professionalism (March 9-10, 2001)
On March 9th and 10th, 2001, the Walter F. George School of Law
of Mercer University held the first Georgia Symposium on Ethics
and Professionalism. This series of symposia is also funded by
Judge Lawson's 1999 order in the Du Pont litigation. Mercer, the
University of Georgia, Emory University, and Georgia State University
rotate the sponsorship of the symposia.
The subject of the first symposium was "Ethics
in Settlement Negotiations," and the discussions revolved
around proposed guidelines for lawyers being drafted by a special
committee of the American Bar Association Section of Litigation.
Keynote speakers were Lawrence Fox, former chair of the American
Bar Association Section of Litigation, and Patrick Higginbotham,
United States Circuit Judge for the Fifth Circuit. Panel discussions
were devoted to Limits on Misleading Conduct, Conditional Settlement
Agreements, Fairness Issues in Negotiation, and Special Issues
in Assisted Settlement. Moderators and panelists for these programs
