Prior to joining Mercer, Ms. Guard left the Florida Attorney General’s Office where she served as an Assistant Attorney General in the agency’s Tallahassee Criminal Appeals Bureau for more than six years. During her time there, Ms. Guard led the bureau’s intern program and litigated criminal appeals in the Florida Supreme Court, Florida First District Court of Appeals and the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. Ms. Guard also conducted federal habeas litigation in the federal district courts in Florida, United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit and was responsible for briefing several cases before the United States Supreme Court. Prior to joining the Florida Attorney General’s Office, Ms. Guard served as Senior Assistant General Counsel at the Florida Department of Environmental Protection litigating for the Public Land’s Section, worked in private practice and as an assistant public defender. Ms. Guard also served as a J.D. Placement Advisor at Florida State University College of Law, where she counseled third year students and graduates regarding job search skills and strategies.
Ms. Guard serves of the Criminal Procedure Rules Committee of the Florida Bar and is currently the chairperson of Subcommittee V. Ms. Guard is also a member of The Association for Legal Career Professionals (NALP) and serves Best Practices Guide Work Group Vice-Chair for the NALP Law School Alumni Career Services Section.
Ms. Guard received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science with minors in Peace Studies and Latin from Florida State University in 1994 and her Juris Doctor from the Tulane University School of Law in 1999 with a Certificate in Admiralty Law.
