Mercer Advocacy Council
The Organization:

The Mercer University Moot Court Board is compiled of several student members who compete in various competitions, which include a written appellate brief and an appellate oral argument. Every year Mercer represents to university well, typically taking home several awards like best brief and best oralist of the competition.

Last year Mercer competed in the following state-wide and national competitions:

There are many benefits as well as responsibilities involved in being a Moot Court member.
The benefits of being on the Board include:

  • Honor and prestige of an invitation
  • Employment opportunities
  • Research experience
  • Brief writing experience
  • Appellate advocacy experience
  • 3 hours of course credit
  • Competition experience in various cities throughout the United States

The responsibilities of being on the Board include:

  • Writing an appellate brief
  • Preparation of an oral argument
  • Hours of practice prior to competition
  • Participation at competition
  • Benching or timing the Lawson Competition during your fourth and sixth semesters
  • Benching the 2L competition during your fifth semester
  • Benching the competition teams
  • Competing in two competitions, or competing in one competition and serving as a student coach for another.

Other responsibilities that may be involved:

  • Student coaching during your sixth semester
  • Moot Court Executive Board
  • Invitation to compete in the National Competition during your fifth semester

Hugh Lawson Moot Court Board Competition

In the Spring, all first year students have the opportunity to compete in an intraschool moot court competition which is organized and run by the Mercer Advocacy Council.
